The Planning Process
Successful design of the 53rd Avenue Community Park means asking challenging questions, and gathering thoughtful answers. As the Hillsboro community plans for a new park, many questions arise:
- What uses will be included on the site, in the Indoor Recreation Center, and in the future aquatic facility?
- Where will the various elements are placed on the site and in relation to each other?
- How can the park best integrate circulation of pedestrians, bicyclists, vehicles with parking and other transportation needs?
- How can we create a unique space that best reflects the community of Hillsboro?
To find answers to these and other questions, the City held various open house meetings with community members and neighbors in 2006 to obtain feedback and ideas on the various stages of brainstorming and revision of park designs. That five month public involvement process, including a variety of open houses and the formation of a 15 member focus group, helped develop the overall master plan for this truly unique and special future community park.
In 2007, the City Council appointed a 14-citizen "53rd Avenue Community Park Indoor Recreation Center Task Force" as part of Hillsboro Parks & Recreation's process to finalize the master plan for the indoor recreation center and explore costs and funding options.
