Project History
Development of Hillsboro’s 53rd Avenue Community Park is a key component of the citywide Parks Master Plan, and will help implement many quality of life factors outlined in the Hillsboro 2020 Plan:
- Strengthen and sustain community
- Enhance neighborhoods
- Preserve the environment
- Create economic opportunity
- Expand educational and cultural horizons
- Promote health and safety
The Park Site
The 53rd Avenue Community Park will be developed on three properties totaling approximately 41 acres, located along NE 53rd Avenue, north of W Baseline Road and south of NE Elam Young Parkway.
The largest parcel is approximately 20 acres, located west of NE 53rd Avenue. Located on the eastern boundary of this parcel is a large island (approximately 5 acres) of mature Douglas fir trees, which, by law, must be preserved. NE Hidden Creek Drive divides two smaller parcels (8 and 13 acres). The 13-acre parcel, south of Hidden Creek Drive, consists of minimal vegetation. The 8-acre parcel includes some trees bordering an existing parking lot and a vacant, metal-roofed CMU block warehouse. This warehouse will be renovated and may be expanded for use as an Indoor Recreation Facility, as well as housing a Parks Maintenance Facility in the north portion of the building.
The development of the 53rd Avenue Community Park will provide significant recreational amenities for the community. The design will need to be consistent with the goals and needs assessment of the Parks Master Plan. The program elements will also need to be complementary to existing facilities already provided in Hillsboro, including the renovated Shute Park Aquatic and Recreation Center.
