What is a Community Park?

As defined in the Hillsboro Parks Master Plan, Community Parks are “intended to meet the recreation needs of large sections of the community as well as those of the surrounding neighborhood. They are areas of diverse uses, both active and passive, including swimming, tennis, walking, picnicking, boating and enjoying nature. They may preserve unique landscapes or natural areas. Community parks provide facilities for group activities and offer recreational opportunities that are not feasible at the neighborhood park level.” Currently the City has two community parks: Shute Park and Rood Bridge Park.

Community members have and will continue to contribute many different ideas on what should be included in the park, as there are many recreational needs in Hillsboro. Looking back to the definition of a community park throughout the planning process will encourage the development of a 53rd Avenue Park that meets the needs of the larger community.
